Dear HHS Community,

The collaborative and committed efforts of the City of Richmond and Richmond Public Schools to build a new Huguenot High School bring electric enthusiasm throughout the Huguenot community. Students and staff share a spectacular level of excitement as they envision a “shopping mall” looking structure from the outside, surrounded by stunning landscapes and filled with compassionate teachers, as well as the most advanced forms of technology and learning tools.

The sentiments of our staff reflect the desire and anticipation of technology, environmentally supportive study areas, and more space to accommodate all classes and teaching methods and/or experiments. As professionals, we do create state-of-the-art lesson plans and we eagerly await the chance to have the resources, space and opportunities to execute these fully. Our students look forward to a brighter environment with more space to congregate and enjoy the new surroundings inside and outside. They also anticipate the possibilities of expanded food services. Mostly, however, they want to be proud of their new school and all of the prospects that it will bring in sports, activities and academics.

Howard Hopkins, Principal, Huguenot High School

The Huguenot High School (HHS) project includes the design and construction of a new 1400 pupil facility at the existing school site on Forest Hill Avenue.

Phase 1 Design activities include programming, education specifications development, schematic design and review and updating the initial project budget. Currently, HHS is in the early stages of Phase 1 Design. The programming and education specifications are scheduled to be completed on or about March 12, 2010 at which time a final report will be issued to Richmond Public Schools (RPS) for acceptance.

The architecture firm for HHS is Moseley Architects. Moseley has begun surveying the school site to determine property boundaries, create accurate topographical maps and utility locations. Moseley also recently spent the day with the RPS Design Team visiting several high schools in Virginia to review current designs and gain a better understanding of the needs of the future HHS. The initial phase of this project will also serve to determine how best to accommodate the new program on the existing site with the existing building. A new concept has been developed for HHS and the thought of making HHS a math /science /technology center is currently being evaluated.
Ground-breaking and site utilities work is presently scheduled to begin November 2011. Students are slated to occupy the space on the first day of school in August 2014. Demolition of the existing building and final construction will be completed around May 2015.

From the firm's beginnings as a one-person practice in 1969, Moseley Architects has grown to a full service design firm of more than 185 members. The firm maintains six offices in Virginia and North Carolina. Moseley Architectsí growth has been achieved through sound management practices and a tenacious commitment to providing clients with high-quality design and service, exemplified by the fact that more than 75 percent of the firm's projects are for repeat clients.

In addition to licensed architects, Moseley Architectsí staff includes interior designers, structural engineers, mechanical engineers, plumbing engineers, electrical engineers, security designers, specification writers, quality control specialists, and environmental impact planners. This multi-disciplined structure stems from the strong belief that the best building design is achieved through the efforts of a highly-integrated team of design professionals who share common goals.
